Three years ago I met a man online and went on a few dates with him. I knew from the start that it wasn’t going to work out: he was stuck in the past, berated everything about his life, and had a general woe-is-me, help-fix-me attitude.

Yet he was also immensely charming when he wasn’t knee-deep in some existential crisis. That’s why even after I had his number (so to speak), I let him convince me to see him a few more times.

One afternoon in the midst of this dating fiasco, I went out to my unattached garage. Click, click, click went the garage door as it opened….then stopped. As I lifted it manually by the outer handles, I thought about how I had rigged it to work several months prior. I began to wonder what went wrong.

I tried all the usual tricks, but could find nothing mechanically misaligned. As I was standing there in that old garage pondering my next move, my cell phone rang.

Guess who?

I looked up at the chain attached to the door’s pulley system and suddenly remembered.

Using synchronicity's sage wisdom to get into the flow of a life aligned with our hopes, dreams, desires, and aspirations.

I remembered that when I’d moved into this place with the old decrepit garage after my divorce, I had no idea how to fix a garage door. I remembered that I’d had no idea about a lot of things. Yet I dove into the deep end of my post-marriage life on a wing and a prayer anyway. I figured it out as I went along.

And as I stared at my date’s number on the caller id of the new smart phone that I’d also had to figure out (because the phone was smarter than me for a while), I shook my head no. No, I’m not even going to go there again. No, I’m not going to date this man. Yes, I deserve better. I remembered my worth.

Then for whatever reason, I sealed this thought with an emphatic push of my garage door opener button. And don’t you know that door clicked, clicked, clicked back down like it had never known a glitch in its life? The space became completely dark, and I became all lit up with the clear knowledge that it had not been the garage door that was malfunctioning after all. It had been me. I’d started to settle for less than I deserved.

But once I stepped back onto the path of self-respect, the door worked like a dream from that moment forward.

Welcome to synchronicity.

See, our outer world always reflects our inner one. When we’re walking the path of our purpose, synchronicity starts to line up a smoother road for us. Likewise, when we take a detour that’s misaligned with our Soul’s goals, synchronicity steps in with reminders that things are going to get real rough, real fast, if we don’t realign our actions with our dreams.

Synchronicity isn’t so much something to “believe in” as it is a tool that helps us determine if we’re in sync with the life we want to lead.

I was reminded of this again just the other day when I decided to get more serious about my attempts at becoming a vegan. To give you a quick background, my biggest “vegan fear” has been finding a good egg replacement. My other biggest diet challenge at the moment is cutting out sugar. Specifically I’ve been on the hunt for a good sugar-free jelly.

So here’s what happened. I’d heard lots of great things about chia seeds’ nutritional value for vegans, so I finally took the plunge and picked up a bag of Bob’s Red Mill Whole Chias* at the grocery. As I’m standing in the kitchen putting away the items I’d purchased, I decided to check out the nutritional value of my new chias. That’s when my jaw dropped wide open. Because here are the 2 recipes that I saw on the back of the bag:

Combine 1 TBSP of whole chias with 3 TBSP of water and let sit for 5 minutes. Add to your recipes to replace eggs.

3 Cups Fresh Blueberries

¼ Cup Agave Nectar

¼ Cup Chia Seeds

½ tsp of Vanilla Extract

What?! You’d think I’d be used to synchronicity’s stellar ways by now, but I just stood there stunned for a moment before doing the happy dance. Here’s a fun fact for you: Synchronicity loves to be acknowledged, so I also said a silent thank you to my Higher Power and the Universe for lining up the tools I needed to help reach my goals.

More Fun Facts about Synchronicity:

  1. The more it’s acknowledged, the more it shows up as a guidepost in our lives.
  2. Synchronicity loves specificity: if you’re confused about something, be very detailed about what it is that you need help with when you pray for guidance. This will also help you read the signs that come your way easier.
  3. Synchronicity takes the complicated stuff in life and simplifies it using wisdom. So the more you follow its guidance, the wiser you become.

  1. YES!!! It is amazing how much the Universe works to let us know whether or not we’re on the right path. It is almost more amazing how strongly most people ignore it and dismiss the synchronicities as coincidences. This post reminded me to keep my eyes open! Thank you!

  2. Samantha, I agree! used to ignore these signs and dismiss them as coincidences, but now I think they’re answers to our prayers. Thank you for your wise words.

  3. I never knew there was a word for this. I see this happen in my life at times, but now i know how to aknowledge it. Thank you for this post!

  4. Thanks Davi! It’s definitely an amazing tool that helps connect me more to the spiritual side of life, especially when I remember to express my gratitude for the signs that come my way.
